Gain a World Class Education at Your Convenience

If your ultimate goal is to graduate from The University of North Carolina but you prefer not to leave your home community, starting your studies at a North Carolina community college can be the most effective course of action. Advisors at your local community college as well as UNC transfer counselors will be able to provide invaluable advice as you plan your courses.

The North Carolina Community College System comprises 58 separate campuses serving all 100 North Carolina counties. A joint UNC/North Carolina Community College System policy, the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA), ensures that community college students who earn an Associate in Arts or an Associate in Science degree or complete the 44 hours general education transfer core requirements will:

  • be accepted for admission at one of the sixteen campuses of The University of North Carolina,

  • receive up to 64 semester hours of credit upon admission, and

  • be considered to have fulfilled the institution-wide, lower division general education requirements of the school to which they are accepted.

In addition to the CAA, nearly all UNC campuses have made individual arrangements – called bilateral agreements – with nearby community colleges to accept credits earned in Associate in Applied Science programs.
