From a North Carolina Community College to a UNC University

North Carolina has the third largest community college system in the United States; 58 community colleges located throughout the state serve all 100 counties. The community colleges offer several ways to help you transition to a four-year UNC institution. You can apply to one or more North Carolina community colleges by using the common application on the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) website.

After completing either the 44-hour general education core or earning an Associates degree at a community college, you will be eligible to transfer to a UNC campus.

If you successfully complete the education core, you will have completed the the lower division general education courses required by UNC universities.

If you earn an Associates degree, you are guaranteed admission to a four-year UNC institution with 64-65 hours of credit.

If your schedule or work and family obligations prevent you from attending face-to-face classes, several North Carolina community colleges offer Associate in Arts and/or Associate in Science degrees fully online.

Use the College Foundation of North Carolina's web-based tool to determine which community college courses transfer to which UNC campuses.

Always bear in mind that college requirements change frequently, so be sure to contact both an academic advisor at your community college and a transfer counselor at the UNC institution you hope to attend before embarking on a course of study.
