Bachelor of Science in Birth-Kindergarten Program: Professional Education Concentration/Licensure

Western Carolina University

Overview

WCU’s Bachelor of Science in Birth-Kindergarten offers a licensure program, the Professional Education Concentration, in birth-kindergarten education to potential teachers in North Carolina by providing a distance education option for students in rural regions. The instructional delivery system includes courses taught through online instruction. The program will be ongoing with two admission deadlines throughout the year with fall and spring semester "starts" each year. The 72-hour program Professional Education Concentration (NC licensure) may be completed in seven to nine semesters (2 years) depending on the number of semester hours a student enrolls in each year. Students may choose to attend part-time or full-time depending on their specific degree requirements and the course offerings.

The courses available in this online major are the same courses offered in the WCU on-campus birth-kindergarten program and are designed and taught by our regular faculty. You will interact extensively with classmates by participating in discussion forums with other students, many of whom are working professionals. Writing is an important component of this program and instructors will provide you with personal feedback concerning content and writing skills.  A no-cost online tutorial service is available to WCU distance learners that provides assistance in strengthening writing skills and supports the understanding and acquisition of academic content.

Your coursework will be entirely online. You will benefit from an online support network, which will give you the opportunity to collaborate fully with other early childhood professionals in the field.
