Birth through Kindergarten Teacher Education - Bachelor of Science

East Carolina University

Overview

East Carolina University's Bachelor of Science in Birth through Kindergarten Teacher Education will prepare you to work with children from birth through five years of age, whether they are developing typically or at-risk for or diagnosed with a disability. You may use this degree to launch a career in the public schools, in an early-intervention program, in a child care and education center, in a residential placement center, or in other child and family settings.

Coursework in the BK major includes classes in child development, special education, family relations, early childhood/elementary education, and professional studies. The courses delivered online are the same courses offered on campus and are designed and taught by the regular ECU faculty. Course delivery is asynchronous, enhanced by various interactive Internet-based learning applications.

Several courses require practicum experiences, and the culminating experience is a full-semester internship (student teaching) in a public school setting. You will complete your practicum experiences and internships at host sites, supervised by ECU faculty.

Pending satisfactory completion of state-required licensure examinations, the program leads to a recommendation for an "A" teaching license from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

This program is accredited by the NC Department of Public Instruction and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
