Overview

UNC Pembroke is a comprehensive university offering degree programs at the baccalaureate and master's levels. Its instructional programs are organized into a College of Arts and Sciences, a School of Business, a School of Education, and a School of Graduate Studies. With a total enrollment of 5,827, the university offers 43 bachelor's and 17 master's degrees. UNC Pembroke is committed to equality of opportunity.

With a student-faculty ratio of 16:1 and an average class size hovering at 30 students, Pembroke occupies the enviable position of being able to treat each student as an individual. Because of the rigors of the curriculum and the personal attention students receive, graduates go on to create vibrant, interesting lives for themselves.

Located in the small community of Pembroke (population: 2,700), in the southeastern region of North Carolina, UNC Pembroke is the safest campus among UNC schools, and, according to U.S. News and World Report, one of the nation's most diverse. Pembroke is 30 minutes south of Fayetteville, a city of approximately 130,000, and is 1 1/2 hours from the Atlantic coast and one hour from the resort city of Pinehurst.

As the fastest growing university—public or private—in the state, UNC Pembroke's campus is undergoing a comprehensive beautification process. A more than $120 million building program is making the campus a better place for students to live and study. The University is always adding more academic programs to meet the needs of students and constituents. Adding new programs also means adding the best and brightest teachers and scholars—faculty members who are committed to helping students develop as citizens and professionals. Teacher Ed

Welcome to the School of Education at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.  Our commitment is to provide the very best preparation programs for teachers, administrators, counselors, and other education professionals in partnership with public schools and other agencies.

Our faculty, administrators and staff are committed to producing high quality graduates; to equipping these graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills for the current and future marketplace; to the generation and application of educational research; and to extensive collaboration with our partners. Through our ongoing partnership work, we seek to improve K-12 student achievement and the professional education programs in which we are engaged.

The Teacher Education Program at UNCP is a cross-disciplinary program, governed by the Teacher Education Committee and administered by the Dean, School of Education.

The program of study, or curriculum, for teacher education majors is comprised of four components: General Education, Specialty Area (major), Professional Studies, and Content Pedagogy. A fifth component, academic concentration, is required in some programs of study. The General Education component includes study of the fine arts, literature, history, philosophy/religion, the social sciences, the natural sciences, mathematics, and physical education. The Specialty Area (major/licensure area) component is designed to provide in-depth understanding, skills, and knowledge specific to the chosen specialty/licensure area. The Professional Studies component includes study of the historical, social, psychological, and philosophical foundations of education; human growth and development; learning theories; curriculum, instruction; exceptional children, communication skills; and the integration of instructional technology. The Content Pedagogy component is designed to help the candidate learn how to teach content to public school students at the targeted age and grade level. The culminating professional development experience for prospective teachers is the senior internship (student teaching) under the direct supervision of a master teacher in a clinical setting.

Online Learning

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) is committed to providing a variety of distance education opportunities that contribute to its mission to meet the educational needs of students and serve the community and society at large by providing cultural and educational leadership. The programs offered through the Office of Continuing Education and Distance Education help carry out the purposes of the University.

Many of our distance education students have family, work, and other responsibilities that may not allow them to come to our campus regularly because of schedule, location, or time limitations. Distance education helps to fulfill UNCP's mission by offering certificates and degree programs that meet the needs of a diverse group of students. Our faculty members are committed to serving your learning needs and can be reached by email, fax, phone, or other web-based technologies. Most of your learning takes place at a place convenient for you—including your personal computer—although, depending on the program, you may be required occasionally to come to a location for an exam or laboratory exercise.

At UNCP, programs involving continuing education, outreach and service are coordinated through the Office of Continuing Education and Distance Education. For more information about Continuing Education and Distance Education at UNCP, call 910-521-6367 or email Send email now.
