Winston-Salem State University is a premier, master's level, public institution committed to developing the skills and values students need to contribute and succeed in the changing economy of the twenty-first century. Winston-Salem State University is a comprehensive institution offering degree programs at the baccalaureate and master's levels. Its instructional programs are in five academic college/schools and life-long learning. The university offers master's programs in physical therapy, elementary education, occupational therapy, nursing, business administration, computer science, rehabilitation counseling, teaching, and English as a Second Language and Linguistics. A graduate center provides master's level study in a cooperative interinstitutional arrangement. Teacher Ed

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), one of the 16 constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina, is a leading regional institution providing learning opportunities for a diverse student population.  For nearly a decade (2001-2008), Winston-Salem State University has been named in the first two of rankings for “Top Public Comprehensive Colleges in the South—Bachelor’s Category” in U.S. News & World Report’s  "America’s Best Colleges" issue.  Located in the piedmont region of North Carolina, the university provides liberal arts and specialized education for almost 6,000 students. WSSU is located on 117 acres in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina, a city of approximately 200,000 residents.

The mission of the School of Education and Human Performance is congruent with the mission of Winston-Salem State University.  As an academic division, the focus is on three areas of excellence: teaching, relevant research, and service to the greater community.  

There are two academic departments in the School of Education and Human Performance.  The Department of Education prepares students for careers in Pre K-12 education. These academic teaching programs are Birth through Kindergarten, Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, and Special Education. Secondary teacher education programs are offered in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences in Art Education, Music Education, Science Education, Social Studies Education, English as a Second Language, English Education, Mathematics Education, and Spanish Education.  The other academic department in the School of Education and Human Performance is the Department of Human Performance which prepares students in Sport Management, Motorsport Management, Therapeutic Recreation, Exercise Science, Physical Education, and Rehabilitation Counseling.

The research component focuses on collecting and analyzing data to identify, assess, evaluate, and improve policies and practices relating to the school's professional programs.  The service component provides in-service training and certification to teachers and technical and practical assistance to agencies, schools, other relevant stakeholders, and Winston-Salem State University.  

Other units of the School of Education and Human Performance include the Child Development Center and Laboratory School, the Maya Angelou Institute for the Improvement of Child and Family Education, and the Teacher Education Advisement Partnership (TEAP) Center.  Graduate programs in the School of Education and Human Performance include the Master of Elementary Education, the Master of Rehabilitation Counseling, and the Master of Arts in Teaching.  

Our academic programs enjoy state, regional, and national accreditations through agencies including the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, the North American Society for Sport Management, the National Recreation and Park Administration/American Association for Leisure and Recreation Council on Accreditation. and the Council on Rehabilitation Education. Online Learning

The Office of Distance Learning administers several credit-bearing opportunities for North Carolinians to enhance their education. These opportunities include credit courses provided by Winston-Salem State University faculty to students who are place- or time-bound and cannot take advantage of on-campus offerings. Delivery methods include online programs and traditional face-to-face programs with faculty-led classes at remote sites, videotape, cable television, technology-assisted instruction including use of the Internet and interactive telecommunications, and other media. While technologies are used to provide instruction, instructional support, and student development services, Winston-Salem State University emphasizes customer service and responsiveness to the needs and concerns of all its students. Distance learners will have access to full-time faculty and staff committed to delivering these services.

Many of our distance education students have family, work, and other responsibilities that may not allow them to come to our campus regularly because of schedule, location, or time limitations. Distance education helps to fulfill WSSU's mission by offering certificates and degree programs that meet the needs of a diverse group of students. Our faculty members are committed to serving your learning needs and can be reached by email, fax, phone, or other web-based technologies. Most of your learning takes place at a place convenient for you—including your personal computer—although, depending on the program, you may be required occasionally to come to a location for an exam or laboratory exercise.
