Program Information

ECU's Master of Library Science degree will prepare you for a career as a librarian in public, community college, and special libraries; school media centers; or other information centers.  You will learn to develop, implement, monitor, and revise collection policies; develop and/or maintain accepted systems and codes to the organization of library resources; use print and electronic resources  to answer reference questions; identify and use appropriate technology to support, simplify, or enhance library functions; plan, organize, and manage library resources; discuss ethical and legal issues that apply to a library setting; plan, organize, and produce online documents or Web sites; and plan and instruct users and staff in the effective use of ideas and information.

Your coursework in this program is asynchronous and delivered entirely online, enhanced by various interactive Internet-based learning applications. If you have less than a year of work experience as a librarian or do not have a teaching certificate, you will be required to serve an internship in a library setting. You will be required to take comprehensive examinations and produce and present a final portfolio project.  The program is approved by NCATE/AASL, NCDPI, and the NC Public Library Certification Commission.
